The Long Distance Ski Championship

Ski Classics 2012 Calender

Ski Classics 2012 involves seven of the most prestigious long distance cross-country races in the world. The season starts on January 8th in the Czech Republic with Jizerska Padesatka. 50km in the tough terrain around Bedrichov and Jizerka will guarantee an exciting start of the season. Marcialonga in Val di Fiemme, Italy is the second race of the Ski Classics season on January 29th. The athletes will race 70km along the valleys of Fiemme and Fassa with a brutal 3km final climb known as the cascata climb to the finish in Cavalese. After less than a week of rest the competition moves on to Germany and König Ludwig Lauf on February 5th with a new race of 50km around Oberammergau. The region where the König Ludwig Lauf takes place is known as one of the most scenic and attractive landscapes in Germany and the course leads trough the areas of Ettal, Graswang and Linderhof before it finishes in the Stadium of Oberammergau.

Tartu Maraton goes back to 1959 but 2012 is the first year it is a part of Ski Classics. On February 19th the athletes gather together again in the Estonian village of Otepää for a 63km race to the finish in Elva. With three out of seven races to go Ski Classics moves up to Scandinavia. First out is Vasaloppet, March 4th, with 90km of racing between Sälen and Mora in Sweden. The most classical long distance cross-country ski race in the world, is held annually, on the first Sunday in March, in the beautiful and historically important region of Dalarna in Sweden. Two weeks later on March 17th the racing continues in Norway and the Birkebeinerrennet. One of the toughest races during the season where the course transverses over two mountains from the start in Tingstadjordet to the finish line in Lillehammer. And after a full season of racing everything wraps up at the Ski Classics final in Norefjell, Norway on March 31st. With the location only one and a half hour by car from the capital city of Oslo and its extraordinary high mountain landscape the 65km offers spectacular skiing. At the finishing we will know who is the Ski Classics Champion of the season. An exciting time to come with tough racing, gorgeous sceneries along the different courses and everything goes live on TV!
