The Long Distance Ski Championship

Event no.5 La Diagonela in Switzerland coming up!

The Visma Ski Classics tour continues this Saturday as La Diagonela takes place in Switzerland. Previous event, Kaiser Maximilian Lauf in Seefeld, Austria, was a challenging undertaking for skiers and organizers alike in the midst of a winter blizzard that brought in massive amounts of snow to the region. The Vasaloppet China winner Andreas Nygaard, Team Santander, repeated the feat in Austria and is ready to fight for a third consecutive victory in the Engadin valley. In the women’s race, Katerina Smutná decided to use kick wax during Kaiser Maximilian Lauf, which turned out to be the right choice as she crossed the finish line before her opponents.

Ramun Ratti from the organizing committee of La Diagonela is very positive about the upcoming event and confident that a great experience awaits everyone from elite athletes to recreational skiers. The weather forecast looks very promising with lots of sunshine and cold weather.

“We are very happy that we can present a nice and challenging 50 km track in perfect conditions,” Ramun says with a relief. “Actually, it is almost the same track as last year. We had to cut out the part to St. Moritz because in the south of the Alps we did not get much snow. Right now, we have about 70 km of groomed tracks in the area. Our race highlights are for sure the part through the Stazerwald forrest and the finish in the historical village center of Zuoz.”

Ramun believes that the fight for the podium places will be tough, but there is a chance for a breakaway in the long uphill in the forest fo Stazerwald, and of course the final climb to the village of Zuoz will be decisive. It remains to be seen whether Nygaard and Smutná are again the fastest skiers in the final sprint or someone else can carry the victory wreath on his or her shoulders.

La Diagonela is except of Visma Ski Classics elite skiers fighting for honor and success, an experience for any cross-country ski enthusiast, because the location is world-famous for its beauty and great hospitality.

“We are located in the beautiful Swiss Alps and the Engadin valley offers a very big and interesting net of cross-country ski courses,” Ramun continues. “So it is a pleasure for everybody to come here and train. Due to high altitude and coldness, we usually have very good conditions for skiing. In addition to Nordic skiing, we have great alpine ski slopes, a bob sleigh run and various events to take part in. The light in our valley is unique and with 325 sunny days in a year it is never a mistake to come here.”
