The Long Distance Ski Championship

Toblach-Cortina next in Visma Ski Classics

Toblach -Cortina, the sixth event of Visma Ski Classics is going to be held on the original 50 km course with the start area in the military airport in Toblach and the finish in the center of Cortina d´Ampezzo. The race will also be the last one in the Visma Alp Trophy competition.

“We are tuning up for the weekend with a lot of volunteers and motivated people working full time,” the race director Stephanie Santer says with a satisfying tone in her voice. “We have much more snow this year, and the course is ready with signs in place. So, skiers can go and check it out!”
Santer thinks that this year’s race will be the one that stays in everybody’s mind as the true nature of Toblach-Cortina will finally reveal itself.

“I’m so happy that we can have the actual course with all the perks so that everybody can really see what this race is all about. The finish in the Olympic town will be incredible, but of course there are other amazing points of interest for skiers to admire. Such as the famous Three Peaks, the old railroad in the Unesco World Heritage site, two tunnels and beautiful lakes and much more.”

The pro athletes may not have much time to adore the nature around them, but they will certainly soak up the atmosphere. After Marcialonga, the game starts anew as the tables were turned, particularly in the men’s competition. Tord Asle Gjerdalen, Team Santander, didn’t win the legendary Italian race fourth time in a row, and Britta Johansson Norgren, Lager 157 Ski Team, saw her arc rival Kateriná Smutná, Bauer Ski Team, getting closer than ever before this season.

The Marcialonga winner Ilya Chernousov, Bauer Ski Team, is the strongest candidate to win this weekend while Johansson Norgren will have to fight really hard to keep Smutná away from the top of the podium. Tore Bjørseth Berdal, Team Koteng, 2nd in Marcialonga, and Morten Eide Pedersen, Team BN Bank, 3rd in Marcialonga, are eager to take the throne from the Russian, but never count out the yellow bib holder Gjerdalen.

Besides Johansson Norgen and Smutná, Lina Korsgren, Åre Ski Club, will be a force to be reckoned with as she was the fastest woman in the famous Cascata Hill this Sunday and finished third in the race. If Sara Lindborg, Team Serneke, has recovered from her sickness, she will also join these three skiers and fight for the glory. Most likely there will be sprint finishes in both categories as the last 10 km is downhill.
